Whatever your needs and whether you play or are just learning to play or whether you are a professional guitarist who wants to cover some lost ground by learning some basics they must have missed out on or forgotten, you can gain some advantages from some basic information about guitars. There are two main types of guitars:

While these are the two basic kinds of guitars, a lot of other kinds of guitars tend to come under these basic categories as well. In terms of basic definitions, acoustic guitars are hollow and have no form of natural amplification by the nature of their design. If you still want to go the extra mile and attach your acoustic guitar to an amplifier, then you can easily go ahead. Electric guitars on the other hand, always need an amplifier.

The bodies of electric guitars vary; sometimes they have solid bodies, while at other times their bodies are semi-hollow. Their tone is a lot warmer as well. Usually you find electric guitars associated with rock stars as well as rock music; however a number of other musicians and kinds of music can play and be played on them as well. While a large number of guitars tend to come with 6 strings, various variations come with 4, 8, 10 and 12 strings.

Nylon stringed guitars are one more popular kind of guitar, they are rather similar to the classical acoustic but they are often used with Flamenco guitar playing and other classical types of guitar playing. They are also great for people who play by nail plucking, although this style of guitar playing is not for everyone.
